CONFERENCE 11-12 AUGUST 2005

50 selected experts in Library and Information Science (LIS) will gather at a conference in Copenhagen 11-12 August 2005 to discuss issues in European LIS curriculum development from the perspective of the Bologna Process.

What is aimed at is a working conference with all those involved actively contributing to a discussion structured around twelve broad LIS curriculum themes. The conference will end up with a tangible product: A publication containing reflections on issues and problems in identifying possible common curricular elements taking into account the rich diversity of LIS educational traditions, cultures and structures in Europe. Cultural broadness and geographical representativeness will be the hallmark of the selected 50 LIS educational experts who will be invited to participate in the conference. A series of virtual workshops will lead up to the conference and provide input for the workshops at the Copenhagen conference.

In addition to workshop discussions with English as the language of communication, there will be 2-3 keynotes. Typically, workshop groups operating during the conference will number 4-5 members. Each workshop group will undertake to prepare a specific chapter for the final publication of the project. Mapping Europe’s LIS programmes

An analytical review based on the findings of an inventory of European LIS academic institutions (questionnaire-based) will be presented at the curriculum conference. The Europe-wide LIS education mapping exercise is a subproject of the LIS Education in Europe project. The intention is to process and summarise the results of this survey so as to make it available as a background material to the academic experts participating in the conference.
