Scientometrics
Scientometrics means literally "measurement of science". In reality it means the application of statistical indicators (especially bibliometric indicators) as a mean for the evaluation of scientific productivity.
"The term "scientometrics" (derived from the Russian "naukometria") was used
mainly in the East and is defined as the study of the measurement of scientific
and technological progress. This also explains the foundation in 1978 and the
title of the journal Scientometrics in Hungary. For more information on the
history and the contents of these names, we refer the reader to Egghe (1988f) . . . Scientometrics . . . deals mainly with science policy applications . . . " (Egghe & Rousseau, 1990).
