Introduction
In 1990 a new Danish MSc programme in information sciences started at The Royal School of Library and Information Science in Denmark. For my own teaching purposes I made in 1991 a compendium of core concepts (Hjørland, 1991). One part of this was published in 1992 (in Danish) and revised and extended and published in two volumes in 1995. The present Core concepts in Library and Information Science is based on the electronic files from the 1995 work, but is being translated to English and updated.
At the same time has the epistemological part of the work from 1991 been updated and expanded and published as Epistemological lifeboat. Because my teaching responsibilities is now mainly knowledge organization this part has got its own work: Lifeboat for Knowledge Organization.
All these works are now written in English. Library and Information Science (LIS) is an international field and it is important that teachers and researchers within LIS cooperate. The need for Danish terminology will be met by Informationsordbogen.
It is my hope that these conceptual tools will be helpful in research and teaching within LIS.
As is the case with Epistemological Lifeboat and Lifeboat for Knowledge Organization are signed contributions welcome, either as new articles or as debate. (Examples are Olof Sundin's entry on 'Studies of professions' and Kari Holland's comment on 'Relevance').
I thank Pernille Brandt for her entry on: Open access.
Below is listed some other important dictionaries, encyclopedias, reviews and terminologies within the field.
Entries are saved in http://netarkivet.dk/index-da.php (four times a year) and irregularly in http://www.archive.org/index.php
