Aims and objectives

The Centre for Cultural Policy Studies, established at the Royal School of Library and Information Science in 1998, operates as from 1 Januar 1998 for the purpose of strengthening basic as well as applied research in the field of Cultural Policy in Denmark.

The Royal School of Library and Information Science has for many years maintained a tradition of cultural and library policy-related research activities and the establishment of this new centre marks a significant new step towards enhancing the quality of research in the cultural policy area by concentrating resources and encouraging continuity of the research being conducted.

Dorte Skot-Hansen works as Head of the Centre and jointly with the School's own research academics, research workers undertaking ad hoc assignments and project work as well as students she intends to further develop an inhouse research competence which can be instrumental in developing new knowledge on the prerequisites and results of cultural policy programmes and initiatives. To achieve this, the following goals and tasks have been defined for the Centre:

  • to undertake theoretical as well as empirical research assignments on its own initiative;

  • to undertake evaluation tasks and to conduct state-of-the-art reviews - on specific issues or surveying and mapping developments in pre-defined areas - commissioned by public sector authorities and institutions or private sector businesses, organizations, etc.;

  • to undertake consultancy work related to cultural policy research & development projects;

  • to expand and consolidate networking activities and to support co-operation involving Danish, Nordic and international cultural policy research;

  • to contribute actively to disseminating research findings and to the current debate on cultural policy themes in the news media as well as in relevant academic journals;

  • to provide a stimulating and productive research environment to attract younger research scholars to the Centre.
