Professional profile

Birger Larsen is Associate Professor and member of the research programme on Information Interaction and Information Architecture at the Royal School of Library and Information Science , in Copenhagen, Denmark. In 2004 he received the first ever PhD degree given at the Royal School of LIS with a dissertation on References and citations in automatic indexing and retrieval systems: experiments with the boomerang effect. His PhD dissertation is available here in PDF format.

His main research interests include Information Retrieval (IR), structured documents in IR, XML IR and user interaction, exploiting context in IR, Informetrics/Bibliometrics, citation analysis and research evaluation. He teaches these subjects on all levels from Bachelor to PhD. From 2004 to 2007 he co-organised the Interactive Track at the Initiative for the Evaluation of XML Retrieval (INEX) together with Dr. Anastasios Tombros (UK) and Saadia Malik (Germany). He is an active member of the TAPIR research group headed by professor Peter Ingwersen at the Royal School of LIS and a member of the following professional organisations: the ACM Special Interest Group on Information Retrieval (SIGIR), the International Society for Scientometrics and Informetrics (ISSI) and the British Computer Society Information Retrieval Specialist Group (BCS-IRSG), as well as BibliotekarForbundet (The Danish Union of Librarians, Information Specialists and Cultural Intermediaries), DFID (Danish Association for Information and Documentation) and DF (the Danish Research Library Association).

His publications include journal articles, conference and workshop papers and book chapters, published both internationally and nationally and often co-authored with collaborators from a widespread network of researchers. He is broadly engaged in program committees and reviewing in main journals and conferences within the areas covered by his research interests.
